Grant for a heat pump system, including central heating upgrades and a bonus for replacing fossil fuel heating. The grant is worth up to €12,500, and is paid only when the work is carried out by a contractor on the SEAI register.
How the figure breaks down. Increased from €6,500 to €12,500 on 3 February 2026. It is now a bundle of three: up to €6,500 for the heat pump system, up to €2,000 for central heating upgrades such as radiators or underfloor, and a €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus for replacing an oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage system. Air to air systems are €7,500. Replacing an existing heat pump is capped at €6,500 (€4,500 for apartments) with no Renewable Heat Bonus or central heating grant.

Your home has to lose heat slowly enough for a heat pump to work, and for most older houses that has to be proved before you apply.
- The home needs an MPRN and must have been built and occupied before 2021.
- Built before 2007: a Technical Assessment is required unless you already hold a valid BER showing a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 W/K·m² or lower. There is a €200 grant towards it, and it must be done before you apply.
- Built 2007 onwards: no Technical Assessment. You sign a Self-Declaration Form instead, and fabric upgrades are not mandatory.
- The assessment may find you need insulation first. Those upgrades carry their own grants.
- Replacing a heat pump that was never grant aided is capped at €6,500, or €4,500 for an apartment, with no Renewable Heat Bonus and no central heating grant.
- You cannot be paid more than the work cost. If the job comes in under the maximum, you get the job’s cost.
- You must have grant approval before the work starts, and a post-works BER afterwards. The full process, with every deadline.

What the work costs
A heat pump costs a median of €16,500 for a detached house, according to SEAI's own figures. After this grant, that leaves about €6,000 to pay.
You pay that in full first. SEAI refunds the grant 4 to 6 weeks after the paperwork, so the money has to be available up front unless you borrow it or use a One Stop Shop. The three ways to pay.

When do I actually get the heat pump system grant money?
On the individual grant route you pay the contractor in full and SEAI refunds you 4 to 6 weeks after you submit correct paperwork, including a post-works BER. So you need the money available first. The alternatives are the state-backed Home Energy Upgrade Loan, or a One Stop Shop, which deducts the grant from the price before billing you but costs more overall.
Do I have to apply before the heat pump system work starts?
Yes, and this is the rule that most often costs people the grant. SEAI will not pay for work carried out before you have grant approval, and there is no retrospective application. Once the offer arrives you have 30 days to accept it and eight months to finish the works, get the post-works BER and return the paperwork.
