SEAI grants for pensioners
There is no pensioner grant, and that is better news than it sounds.
Age is not an eligibility criterion for anything SEAI runs. A pensioner is entitled to exactly the same grants as a thirty-year-old, and there is no scheme you unlock by turning 66. What does change what you can claim is whether you receive Fuel Allowance or another qualifying payment, and when your house was built.
Check your Fuel Allowance, not your pension.
The State Pension is not a qualifying payment for any SEAI scheme. Fuel Allowance is, and most people on the non-contributory pension receive it. That one entitlement is what opens the fully funded route and the higher insulation rates.
Which of the three applies to you
1. Free upgrades, if you get a qualifying payment
The Warmer Homes Scheme pays in full, with no contribution. You need to own and live in the home, it must have been built and occupied before 2006, you must receive one of seven qualifying payments, and the home has to be found suitable at survey. The catch is the queue: currently up to 24 months.
The qualifying payments are 7 in total, and the ones that most often apply to a pensioner are Fuel Allowance andCarer's Allowance where you live with the person you care for.

New for 2026, and the most useful thing on this page if you cannot wait two years. On a qualifying payment you can claim up to €2,500 for attic insulation and up to €2,300 for wall insulation, choose your own registered contractor, and have it done in weeks. SEAI confirms it “will not affect your place” on the Warmer Homes list.
You pay for the work upfront and are refunded the grant afterwards, so you need the money available first.
3. The ordinary grants, whatever your income
If you do not receive a qualifying payment, you claim the same individual grants as anybody else. Your house needs an MPRN and, for most measures, to have been built and occupied before 2011. You pay the contractor and SEAI refunds you 4 to 6 weeks after the paperwork, or a One Stop Shop takes the grant off the price upfront so you never front the full sum.

Common questions
Are pensioners entitled to SEAI grants?
Pensioners are entitled to exactly the same SEAI grants as everybody else. There is no pensioner scheme and age is not an eligibility criterion for anything SEAI runs. What can qualify you for extra support is receiving Fuel Allowance or another qualifying welfare payment, which many pensioners do.
Does the State Pension qualify me for free insulation?
No. The State Pension is not one of the seven qualifying payments for the Warmer Homes Scheme. Fuel Allowance is, and most people on the non-contributory pension receive it, so check whether you have Fuel Allowance rather than looking at your pension.

Yes. Homeowners on qualifying welfare payments get higher fixed-amount grants for attic and wall insulation: up to €2,500 for attic insulation and up to €2,300 for wall insulation. Since 2026 you can claim these while staying in the Warmer Homes queue, choosing your own registered contractor.

Will a grant cover the whole cost?
